I know there’s a lot of artists, especially plush artists, that struggle with this concept, so I’m glad you asked!
Just for clarity this is my personal opinion and how I do things, so those of you out there may disagree.
The copyrighted characters I make are owned by big companies that are making TONS OF MONEY. I’m down here making a pitifully small amount in comparison. Almost no company will care whatsoever if you sell plushies or art of their characters because they’re getting their money elsewhere. Especially when the company doesn’t offer plushies or prints of their characters themselves because they don’t feel it would be profitable for them. If they feel that way then they’re not gonna care about some people on the internet hand making fanart.
Now, it would be different if I were mass producing plushies of copyrighted characters, then they’d probably take notice. Mass production entails huge batches of plushies and at that point you’d be making enough profit and buzz around your product to turn some legal department heads.
One last thing I wanted to mention is making plushies of characters from smaller creators like webcomic artists. ALWAYS ALWAYS ask permission to make and sell plushies of characters that belong to smaller creators. The reason being that those artists are probably depending on their own work to put bread on the table and profiting off of their characters would be in really awful.
Well, I’ve said my piece. If anyone else out there has any comments or opinions on the matter, feel free to discuss! I don’t talk to my followers enough I don’t think!
